The origin of Artá dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological sites found in the area. It was an important center of Talaiotic culture, a civilization that flourished in the Balearic Islands between 1000 and 700 B.C.

During the Middle Ages, Artá was an important center of Islamic culture in Mallorca. The Christian conquest in the 13th century changed the fate of the village, but even today, Arab influences can be appreciated in its architecture and urban layout.
